Mr. Kitack Lim
Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization
Mr. Kitack Lim (Republic of Korea) is the eighth elected Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization.
IMO –
the International Maritime Organization – is the United Nations specialized agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. IMO's work supports the UN sustainable development goals.
IMO has held the latest in a series of regional webinars to address the challenges faced by seafarers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The virtual event (held on 18 March) for the Latin American region identified best practices, covering issues including medical guidance, disembarkation of seafarers for medical care, vaccination, digitalization, mental health, and effects of COVID-19 on crew changes and repatriation.
Exploring tangible solutions in climate change mitigation in the shipping industry by use of technology was at the core of a virtual energy efficiency conference and exhibition (Confex) which opened on 17 March.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, seafarers have faced difficult working conditions including uncertainties about port access, re-supply, crew changeovers and repatriation. Seafarers' rights to be treated fairly remain at the forefront of IMO’s work. The 2021 Day of the Seafarer campaign is calling for a fair future for seafarers.
